Kindle Overload

We've just passed the six-month mark, so I've made a mid-year resolution. My plan is to read the books on my Kindle. I've got a few on there. Some were free, some I've read, some are on my digital TBR pile. But the time has come to read them.

Evaluate and Read

I think the six-month mark is a good stage to evaluate things, and so far this year, I've been rubbish at reading. I've been in a slump, and I can't decide what I want to read.

Time to work through the list, but naturally, it will be in between working on my own books, so it may take a while. I'm about to read a boatload of romance because that's mostly what's on my Kindle. I feel like this is an achievable goal, given that it is reading. I'm good at that.

New Books

I'm not planning on buying new books while I do this, but come on, be real... I'm not going to be able to resist buying books. That's a hobby all on its own, so for all I know, this will be a resolution that never reaches an end because I'll just keep adding to it. I'm okay with that.

Alphabetical or Jump In

Do I start with the As or do I pick and choose? That's the question. I think I'll pick and choose. Sometimes you don't fancy certain books, and I don't want to make the slump worse. I want to get into reading again. I want to lose myself in books.

New Cover

I published my erotic romance Protecting Their Heart quite a while ago now, and I'm working on the second book of the Lunar Falls series right now.

However, the cover for Protecting Their Heart is a stand-alone cover, and I would like the series to tie together, so for my next paranormal romance book, the second, I'm changing the covers.

Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover

I'm a romance writer and I write erotic romance novels. They're sexy and they show it. I mean, they're menage romances. There's no way they're not going to go into detail for the love scenes.

I recently saw a post online, and they made a good point. If you're reading an erotic romance, maybe you don't want everyone on the train or bus or coffee shop or break room to know. It's nothing to be ashamed of. After all, as stated in Protecting Their Heart, it's about the relationships, not the number of partners, but there is such a thing as discretion, so I've kept that in mind with the new cover.

There are no half-naked men on the cover, though I do miss that. There's no sexy woman. Its a simple cover that doesn't announce to the world what you're reading.

Budget

It's no secret that I'm a struggling writer. I have a day job, and I live on a strict budget. I don't have money to spare, so while I love being a romance writer, I just don't have hundreds of pounds to spend on the covers, so this one, I've made myself.

It's not perfect. It might not appeal to everyone, but I'm never going to stop writing erotic romance so until I have money to spare, I'm making do.

The Reveal

So, without further delay, here is the new cover. Flowers, hearts and inside: a story with two sexy wolf shifters and the woman who is theirs.

Like I said, it might not be to everyone's taste, but it's mine, and it's part of the story now—part of Lunar Falls.

Book Goals

"I think books are like people, in the sense that they’ll turn up in your life when you most need them." – Emma Thompson

I'm a romance writer so it's no secret that I love books. And romance books? Them's my jam. Reading and writing are major parts of my past, present and future. I've always read, I've always written, and that isn't going to change.

Writing Goals 2024

We're nearing the latter part of the year, and I have writing goals to fulfil, and not much time to do it in. The scraps of writing time that I snatch are becoming more and more important if I'm going to achieve my goals.

  • Accalia Mini

This is the book I'm working on now and obviously, that is not the official title, but the filler title for the novella that is my work in progress. It's a shifter romance that I'm shimmying in, between Protecting Their Heart and Rose's story.

  • Martha's Book

It's gonna get written, I swear it is. Slowly and surely the words that tell Martha's story will get typed. It's just going to happen after Accalia Mini.

  • London Baby

This is a new series and I'm working on book one, and the goal is to have it written by the end of the year, even if it's not printed until next. It's a menage romance set in my favourite city: London.

Those are the three. The three that I want to complete in 2024. Before January 1st 2025 my goal is to complete these projects and then start fresh with more next year. I just have to cram it in between motherhood, day jobs and sleep. I can do it.

Reading Goals 2024

Up to now, my goals have been to read my library books and reduce my TBR pile, but I've got a lot of books and my TBR pile does not seem to be reducing. After my trip to the book stall at the market, it's actually bigger than it was.

Reading goals are fairly general for me, because you don't know what you'll feel like reading until you're choosing the book, but there are a few authors that I would like to catch up on, because I've fallen behind.

Lack of funds means I can't always afford to buy the books I want and so the novels by my favourite authors that l like to own and display proudly on my bookshelf are building up.

  • Gena Showalter

The Lords of the Underworld series is one my favourites. I absolutely love the books but the last one I read was The Darkest Touch which means there are about six Gena Showalter books I have yet to read. Some major catching up to do.

  • Nalini Singh

The writer love of my life. Oh, Nalini Singh, your words are so perfect. I managed to buy two of these books when I got a book gift card, but there are still a lot of them that I don't own. I need my Nalini books for my bookshelves!

  • Eve Langlais

Kindle collection. Eve Langlais's books are funny, sassy and the women are curvy and don't take crap from anybody. She also writes and publishes quicker than I can afford so there's a large backlog of these books I have yet to buy.

  • Kresley Cole

I feel like Kresley Cole and Gena Showalter go hand-in-hand. If you've read one, then you have to read the other. Maybe I feel that way because for me, one led to the other. Paranromal Romance is my favourite genre, and Kresley is the queen.

I Love the Love Books

Obviously, there are way too many books on my to-buy list for me to get and read this year, but if I can just get some, I'll be a happy romance reader, and if I can complete my writing goals, I'll be a happy romance writer.

I've got book lists all over and I can't wait to see that list go down.

A New World

I'm currently working on the first book in what will be my third series. This series is a little different to the others because it doesn't include any supernatural elements. This series will be a love story set in London

The Three Series

The three series of books I'm writing are The Shadow Coven, Lunar Falls and this, as yet unnamed London love stories compilation, and these are the worlds I will be concentrating on for the foreseeable future.

As a romance writer I love creating worlds and watching them develop and I can't wait to write the stories of all the characters who are just waiting to fall in love. Read on for a little information about the worlds that are about to grow.

The Shadow Coven

When love makes its way to a cursed coven...

Years ago the sisters of the Shadow Coven committed an act of evil and for that they were punished. The witches of the coven would no longer find their soul mates, but be destined to live out their eternity alone, without true love and without children.

The descendants of these witches have lived knowing they only had each other, but centuries after the evil act, a goddess has forgiven the witches and now they're soulmates are finding their way to The Shadow Coven and a world of witchcraft.

Protecting Their Heart

Home to the Accalia wolf pack.
Lunar Falls is a small town and it's the home of the Accalia pack of wolves. Their land is in this town and though the shifters' and humans' lives are intertwined in town, the territory of the wolves is forbidden to all without an invitation. Trespassers will be killed - not eaten.

That is until Penny, a human female who lives on the border is chased onto their land and into the arms of two male shifters. Not only is this trespasser spared. They want to keep her.

Now, with every story, the wolves of the Accalia wolf pack are connected to others outside their pack.

The London Series

Love and passion in the city of London.

Four roommates living their lives in London are each about to find love in a way they never expected. It's not just one man for these women. In this menage series, it's two men for each woman.

These four friends are about to be whipped into a world of money, romance and passion.

Still to Come...

Along with the first instalment of this new series, the next books I'll be releasing will be Martha's story in The Shadow Coven and Rose's story in Lunar Falls, both characters we've already met in River's Story and Protecting Their Heart.

You can visit my website for book extras, including free short stories, or take a look around this blog and read more here.

Protecting Their Heart Release

 Release day is coming!

Protecting Their Heart is the first instalment of the Lunar Falls series. It's a menage love story between Penny, Adam and Ethan.

In this paranormal romance, Adam and Ethan are wolf shifters, part of the Accalia Pack, and they're out running when their mate is literally chased into their arms. Their new mission is to keep her safe from the stalker determined to have her and to make her fall for them at the same time.

The Lunar Falls series will be a collection of romance books that follow the shifters and their future mates who live in the small town, as their lives are transformed by love.

It's a sexy story with lots of passion and lots of romance, and as a romance author, I love writing feisty females who don't let their alpha mates get away with being bossy.

If you're interested in reading anything else I've written, then River's Heart is a paranormal romance about a witch coven who have their curse lifted and are now free to find love. You can even take a look around my website and get some book extras.

Protecting Their Heart is out now and you can buy it from Amazon here if you're in the US, or here in the UK. You can also get it from Smashwords here

Conversations With Characters: Protecting Their Heart

Sometimes when I'm telling their stories the characters from my romance novels get a bit chatty. They're not necessarily helpful, but as a romance writer, it's nice to talk to them.

Protecting Their Heart is my current Work In Progress. A menage shifter romance that is at the moment, in edits.

Chatty Characters

I have a scene in the current Accalia book and my characters keep creating obstacles, never quite reaching the scene planned. I don't know if I'm forcing it or if the book is necessary to move things forward.

Adam: It'll happen if it needs to happen.

That's not really helpful.

Adam Continued: (Shrugs) Was aiming more for honest.

Ethan: I say do it. (Pause) Wait, am I in it?

That's not the point.

Ethan Continued: If the scene involves me or Penny, then I say keep it.

Adam clears his throat pointedly. At Ethan's blank look, he lifts an eyebrow. Ethan rolls his eyes.

Ethan Continued: Fine. Me, Penny or Adam then keep it.

Obviously one of you is in it. It's your bloody book.

Ethan Continued: Then keep it. You know what I say about a book about us. The longer the better.

Romance Novels and The Characters

More information and details will be coming soon from the Accalia wolf pack and the books about them. Book cover, teasers, and blurb are still to come.

Writing. Not Marketing.

Last year I did a lot of work on my website, my blog and my social media. I regret that now.

I spent many many hours writing blogs, planning posts and generally trying to interact with other people. The impact that had on book sales was zero.

I’m a writer, and somewhere along the way, that shifted, and I felt like I was working more in marketing. The repercussions of that were that I wrote less, I published less. I missed out on doing what I love doing, and that is just writing stories. It was my own fault. I thought it was important to being a writer.

Don’t get me wrong. I like social media for engaging with others, but last year, I think I looked at it wrong. I concentrated on it too much, to the detriment of my writing, and that meant that word counts and completed works took a hit.

I’m doing it differently this year. This year I’ve decided to concentrate on writing more. Not because I think marketing isn’t important, but at the end of the day, you can’t market what you haven’t written, and I write because I love it. Because I want to share my stories with others, even if that story is only shared with a few people.

I appreciate each and every person who takes a chance on me by buying my books, and downloading my stories, and so this year, I want to get more of them out there.

I still want to engage, I still want to talk to others, but I want to do it so that I can share with you. I want social media to be fun.

This is my year of writing. Not my year of marketing. I am a writer after all.

Martha's Bonfire Night

Was it a good date? No.

But, had Martha learned something from it?

She took a big bite of her burger and sighed with her mouth full. She’d learned that dating was pointless and women who did it were stupid. That counted as a life lesson, right?

Or maybe women weren’t stupid, and it was only Martha who had such bad luck with guys. It couldn’t be normal to find this many weirdo men in such quick succession. From the one who spent the night on his phone, refusing to make eye contact and barely uttering a word, to the one who massively insulted her in French thinking she wouldn’t understand him.

It said a lot about the whole mate-search that the best date she’d been on was the one where she was stood up. That would have certainly been preferable to what she’d just experienced with the man she’d fled not two minutes ago. He was the worst of them because he was the first to make her feel bad about herself. Even the one who’d called her a ho in French, hadn’t been personal, but Jeff… His comments had stung in their thoughtlessness.

Well, screw him! At least she got a burger out of it. She’d paid for it herself and it was damn good.

It placated her temper as she made the five-minute walk from the restaurant to Garrett Park.

Maybe she was still cursed. What if they’d misunderstood the goddess’s decree that their coven was forgiven for the atrocities committed by past members?

Martha’s coven sisters had done their best to make amends, but how could you make amends for the acts of others? How did you repent for the sins of the unforgiveable? A curse would certainly explain the string of bad dates she’d been on.

Except… the coven couldn’t be cursed. Her sister River had found her mate in Alex, a handsome, tall, toned man who saw only perfection in his mate.

Could be her sisters were forgiven but Martha wasn’t. She hadn’t done anything bad, though, to warrant being singled out with and ancient curse. Hell, she was one of the better-behaved of her immortal sisters.

There was no explanation for the men she’d had no more than a single date with. If even that.

The burger was gone long before she reached the park, but that was okay. The angry stomp of her brown boots hitting the sidewalk was soothing.

The lap she did around the muddy park, seeking out her sisters and Alex not so much, although, it did give her a chance to see what stalls were set up.

She was just about to get her cell phone out to call River and find out where they were when the fiery red of April’s hair caught her attention from the corner of her eye.

Her coven, her family, were standing by a food truck that sold soup and they were gathered together, paper cups held in their gloved and mittened hands. Or at least some of her coven were.

Bethany, April, River and River’s mate Alex. He was an honorary member. Always there to support River but with no magical abilities. He’d become one of them quicker than Martha had expected, and now he was the big brother they’d never known they wanted. Even her older sisters, those whose ages were in the hundreds were treated like annoying little sisters by Alex.

Martha crossed the park to join her family. Bethany was the first to notice her approach, and a smile spread over her heart-shaped face. Her dark hair was tucked under a grey woolly hat with a blue bobble on top. Her eyes shone behind the smudged lenses of her square glasses and she was dressed in jeans and a dark grey puffy jacket. Her Converse trainers were marked with mud and as always, a heavy camera hung on a long strap, slung over her shoulder.

“Martha!” she exclaimed, and the others turned in surprise.

“I thought you couldn’t make it,” River said.

April winced and then asked, “How was the date?”

Four pairs of attentive eyes locked on her, and she glared at her red-headed sister. “It was great,” and yes, that was sarcasm dripping from her voice. “It lasted eight whole minutes. We get married next week.”

With a roll of her eyes, April ignored Martha’s attitude. She was used to it. They were roommates after all.

“What happened?”

“You didn’t get stood up again, did you?” River asked.

“No.” Unfortunately. “I arrived and he was waiting outside. He eyed me up and down, frowned and it got worse from there.” She was definitely deleting her dating app. “The next five minutes were spent telling me that he didn’t usually date chunky girls, and how attractive I’d be if I lost twenty pounds.”

“Jerk!” River exclaimed.

April’s fiery temper kicked in and she ground her teeth together, parting them only long enough to grind out, “Bastard.”

“You’re beautiful, Martha,” Bethany rushed to tell her. “Don’t listen to him.”

“I won’t.” But his words had wormed into her self-confidence and made her wonder if he was right. She tried to not let it impact her, but it was hurtful to hear. She wasn’t the skinniest girl in the world, but she’d always been content with what she considered to be an ordinary shaped body.

“Did you leave then?” Alex asked.

She should have, but she hadn’t wanted to be rude. “Not quite. I stuck around for another five minutes, but all he did was give me advice on nutrition and fitness, and when I ordered a burger, he told the waiter to bring me a grilled chicken salad.”

“He actually changed your order?” April asked. “While you sat there?”

River would have reacted, but she was too busy standing there with her mouth hanging open. It took Alex lifting her chin up, to have her snapping her jaw shut.

“He tried, but I didn’t let him. I said I wanted a burger, but when they brought it, he had such disgust on his face that I’d have never been able to eat it in front of him. I gave him money for it and I left.”

“Good,” River said. “He doesn’t deserve a date with a woman as beautiful as you.”

Alex nodded his agreement. “He sounds like a moron. His loss.”

It was heart-warming how they rushed to soothe her hurt feelings, but she was still deleting the stupid app when she got home. She’d have done it right then, but she didn’t want to be rude by getting her phone out.

April slipped her arm around Martha’s waist and squeezed comfortingly. “You look lovely, and that jackass was a waste of lipstick.”

“Thank you.”

“At least now you’re here for the bonfire and fireworks with us. That’s much more fun than a date with some random man.”

“You want soup, Martha?” Alex asked.

Martha shook her head. “I had my burger as I walked here. I’m going to have a toffee apple tonight though.”

“Ooh, donuts for me,” River said. “They have hot sugar donuts freshly made at the pink truck.”

It was a cold night, but Martha was wrapped up warmly inside her black woollen coat. She’d worn a dress for her date, but her tights were thick, and she and April held onto each other for warmth while Bethany went around the park taking pictures, and River and Alex stood together in a tight embrace. After a while Alex went for a walk around the park and River joined their little huddle until he returned with donuts for her and a toffee apple for Martha. She always forgot how difficult they were to eat until her face was stained with sticky red toffee like a child’s.

When the bonfire was lit, the heat wrapped around them along with the cloying aroma of smoke. She loved the smell though. Even when she was little, she’d enjoyed the festivities of bonfire night. The flames, the people, the fireworks. When she was younger it had been exciting, and now she was older, it still held the same magic for her.

Even in her twenties, she loved trying to write her name with a sparkler.

Bethany returned to them, sipping a hot chocolate, her cheeks pink from the cold, and a big grin on her face.

“The fireworks are starting soon,” she announced excitedly, her gaze already drifting up to the sky.

Her anticipation was infectious, and they all huddled together, waiting for the bursts of light to flash throughout the black sky.

When they did start the bright colours were vibrant against their dark backdrop, and the bangs made her jump, but they laughed, and they oohed and aahed at the pretty sight.

Dating strangers just wasn’t for Martha. She hadn’t enjoyed any of it. She didn’t feel comfortable, and if she was honest, she’d known nothing was going to come of it because she hadn’t felt attraction for any of them. Not even a hint of desire, and it couldn’t be that way with her mate.

No, dating wasn’t for her, but as she looked at her family, her heart was full. She had a lot in her life. She had love and laughter. She had constant joy. Things weren’t always easy, but she was happy with what she had.

April watched the fireworks with just the slightest curl to her pink lips, whereas Bethany had tipped her head right back, her teeth white from her wide grin, completely immersed in the lights above her. Her camera hung limply, forgotten.

It was the sight of River and Alex that got to her though. They were so natural together. Every act was centred on the other person without them even realising. Alex had his arms wrapped around her waist, leaning down to hear what she was saying, the soft tendrils of her blonde hair brushing his lips.

Both were smiling, but it was the tenderness as they looked at each other that stabbed Martha in the heart. This was nothing special for them, just a conversation like any other day, but it was something Martha wanted for herself.

For someone to look at her the way they looked at each other.

Her mind flashed back to when she’d approached Jeff, her date earlier in the evening and the disappointment she’d seen there.

She sighed, drawing April’s attention.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

“Yeah,” she replied. “I’m good.” And she was. She’d love to find her mate, but not the way she had been. She wasn’t searching for him any longer. She’d put her faith in the goddess and have faith that he was out there. Probably pushing a pull door. He’d come when it was the right time, and until then, she had all she needed.

“I forgot to tell you,” April said. “A guy at work has a friend who manages a nightclub, and they’re hiring.”

Oh, right. She had almost all that she needed. A job would be good though. Five days ago, she’d been made redundant from the library she’d worked at for years.

“I know it’s not anything you’ve done before,” April continued, “but you said you wanted something different, and this is different.”

It was certainly that. “Late nights, loud music,” Martha said. “Might be fun.”

April pulled a card from her coat pocket and handed it over. “You just have to email your resume to the manager Mervin.”

Martha looked down at the small, white card in her hand. She’d spent a long time in the peaceful quiet of the library, that a job in a nightclub would be a shock to her senses, but it might just be a shock she needed.

“Thanks, April,” she said.

“You’re welcome.”

Fireworks exploded above her head, the smell of smoke clung to her, she was surrounded by love, and a prickling sense of anticipation washed over her.

Bonfire night was always exciting, but it was the sense of hope in the night air that had her heart kicking up its beat. The future was scary, but it was wide open. Anything could happen. Anything.

Witches of the Shadow Coven

River: River is a dreamer. She has no biological family, but she found her own in the coven when they took her in. She’s optimistic at heart and she loves her sisters and the small apartment she calls home with two of them. She hates confrontation and at the age of twenty-four she is the youngest coven member.

Martha: Loves books of all genres. She was a librarian and always loved her work and she believed she was content with her life, but now she's restless. In need of a change. She hasn’t dated much until recently and she’s not sure it’s for her. She’s always been happy in her own company, and with her sisters. Quiet and un-confident, she’s one of the younger coven members, in her late twenties.

April: She may look like she’s only in her twenties but April found her way to the Shadow Coven when she was twenty-three and she’s been there for the last twenty-years. She froze into her immortality age twenty-five because she took a long time to decide if it was the life April wanted. She has no regrets, but that’s because she has no family.

Simone: Simone was the third member to join the Shadow Coven. She bonded with them when they were building the coven back up. She doesn't talk about her age, but they know that she was alive at least three hundred years ago. Her mother was a witch, though she wasn't a member of any coven and though she loved her mother, her father was a hard man.

Eva: She’s stunning, really beautiful, and she’s always been highly coveted by other people. She’s brazen and strong, and she doesn’t back down from confrontation. She’s always had a mysterious air, and she was a dancer. She was twenty-one when she joined the coven and twenty-two when they initiated her into her immortality.

Rose: She was born just after world war one and she has happy memories of her early life. She was in her thirties when she entered the coven. She's a striking witch, truly beautiful. She's highly intuitive and loves to cook, making her own recipes. She loves a dinner party which she subjects her sisters to multiple times a week.

Corey: Corey joined the coven in 1959. She’s loving and strong and she’s the one who will spend every second of her day helping other people if they need her. She’s never regretted joining the coven and because she’s had some bad experiences with men so she’s doesn’t feel like she’s missed out by not having a mate.

Bethany: One of the few witches who still needs glasses after gaining immortality. She was completely blind though, so glasses is an improvement on what it used to be. Bethany joined the coven in the very early 1900s. The moment her sight returned, she fell in love with art, and with photography in particular. She’s rarely without a camera. She’s strong and smart, but she thinks of herself as a nerd.

Lucy: She’s hyper and wild. A brazen, confident woman, but at the same time she has her vulnerabilities. She’s just good at hiding them. Lucy joined the coven in the 1950s. She drove her parents crazy with her antics right up until she found the coven.

Eleanor: Eleanor joined the coven in the 1860s. She is graceful and elegant and it’s ingrained right down to her soul. She’s danced her whole life, and she loves ballet but she’s never done it as anything more than an interest. She loves her sisters and is one of the earlier members of the Shadow Coven.

Jennifer: Jennifer joined the coven in the 60s. It took the coven a long time to earn her trust and it was years before she joined them completely. She was twenty-six years old. She didn’t rush into the decision and she’s never regretted it.

Victoria: Victoria was friends with Helen as a girl and when the original Shadow Coven fell, she was there to help build it back up. Victoria was such a good girl when she was a child, but over the years she’s added spice to her soul. She’s sexy and vivacious, and she goes after what she wants.

Helen: Best friends with Helen, they played together as girls. She saw the fall of the Shadow Coven, it was with Victoria’s support that she made the decision to continue the coven. For a long time it was just the two of them, so they're close.

Savings: A Penny at a Time

I don't have much disposable income. It's a sad but true fact that after paying bills, buying groceries, paying for petrol and the...
